Hippotizer Drives Precision Projection For Doe Maar De Musical

A vibrant stage tribute to Dutch eighties pop band Doe Maar is now playing under the glass dome of the AFAS Theater in Leusden, with Green Hippo's Hippotizer media servers powering all projection and LED visuals.

Visual specialists Tenfeet selected a Hippotizer Boreal+ MK2 as the production's video backbone, providing dependable multi-output playback and precise control across the performance. The setup features a full-stage front projector, two wide-angle projectors and an LED back wall.

Produced by MediaLane, Doe Maar de Musical brings the band's music to life on stage, weaving lyrics into the scenography to add narrative depth. As the action moves between four locations — three homes and a bar — the design leans on richly saturated colour environments, textured LED backdrops and a striking six‑metre‑wide vinyl record that is animated through projection.

"We needed a system capable of delivering four reliable outputs while remaining easy to program and flexible enough for a complex set," said Kevin Buysse, Video Programmer at Tenfeet. "The Boreal+ MK2 was the perfect choice. It's powerful, stable, and integrates beautifully into a theater environment."

A key technical challenge was aligning the two onstage projectors covering the oversized record. Wide mirror lenses made manual alignment tricky, but Hippotizer's SHAPE 3D projection-mapping tool enabled a fast and intuitive workflow.

"SHAPE allowed us to get a rough alignment incredibly quickly, and the warping tools let us fine-tune the projection with ease," Buysse explained. "It saved a huge amount of time on site."

The video system is programmed via DMX, with a grandMA3 console using sACN to drive the Hippotizer, giving lighting and video teams a unified, real-time responsive workflow.

Content was produced by Haarlem-based studio Blacksand, with Yuri Kneppers and Eric Groeneveld crafting visuals closely aligned to the director's vision. Three full song-length sequences, rendered in meticulous detail, have quickly become audience favourites.

"The visual design is the true highlight of the production," said Buysse. "The Blacksand team delivered incredibly intricate sequences that pair perfectly with the music. With Hippotizer, every detail — from subtle texturing to bold animated moments — is reproduced with complete accuracy. Whether it's complex multi-surface mapping or fast-paced musical sequences, the system simply delivers."
