Ravensbourne Alumnus Wins BKSTS ChEFF Award

Ravensbourne graduate, Lee Hulse, has won an award from the BKSTS Soho Chief Engineers Society (ChEFF).

The BKSTS (The International Moving Image Society) accredit the BSc courses at Ravensbourne. Thanks to funding from ChEFF, the Chief Engineers of Facilities Forum, they have recently introduced a new award of £1,000 for the most innovative broadcast engineering project on an accredited course.

Roland Brown, President of the BKSTS and ex-chief engineer at Molinaire, visited Ravensbourne in June 2015 to assess engineering projects and meet broadcast engineering students.

"We are honoured," said Mr. Brown, "to administer this award to encourage students to develop innovative, cutting-edge technologies."

The winning project, 'Android Hybrid Radio Prototype', was created by Lee Hulse, who graduated from Ravensbourne in 2015 with a 1st class BSs (Hons) Broadcast Systems Technology. "This was a challenging project," said Lee. "Starting it was daunting as I had no prior knowledge of coding or app development. The final app builds around the framework of RadioDNS standards. The application delivers visuals and an electronic programme guide to the user using the RadioVis and RadioEPG models, gathering extra content to make radio more appealing and interactive for the user. Being recognised with this award has reaffirmed my interest and belief in my project's area of research."

Mr. Brown praised Lee for being a very articulate student, who knew what he was doing through a well thought-out project.

Thrilled to have received this award, Lee commented: "Gaining recognition from industry for my work has given me a great deal of confidence going into my new career."

The BKSTS ChEFF award will be made annually for at least five years. "Ravensbourne's broadcast technology team looks forward to a continued and valuable relationship with BKSTS that enhances the student learning experience," said Martyn Gates, Course Leader.

Martin Uren, Associate Senior Lecturer in Broadcast Technology at Ravensbourne, has recently been invited to become a Vice-President of the BKSTS, in addition to his current role as Chair of the BKSTS Education and Training Group and member of the BKSTS Council.
