Munro installs two mixing theatres at Shepperton Studios

UK studio design consultancy Munro Associates have completed the design and installation of two more film mixing theatres at Shepperton Film Studios in Middlesex.
The company, headed by acoustician Andy Munro, has had a long association with Shepperton Film Studios and has completed seven projects designed to upgrade and extend the Studio's sound mixing and preview facilities.
Back in 2000, Shepperton opened the Orson Wells building that houses two large film mixing theatres, a machine/projection room shared by both theatres and two small editing rooms – all designed by Munro Associates.
These theatres have enjoyed great success, particularly with external clients in need of high-grade dubbing facilities. To capitalise on this success, Shepperton recently commissioned Munro Associates to install two more film mixing theatres using a virtually identical design to the original brief. On this occasion the actual building work was handled by Munro Associates' subsidiary company, Form & Funktion.
The rooms are equipped with extensive Pro Tools systems and the two new theatres have custom-designed Munro Associates M4FX monitoring systems, based on state-of-the-art Dynaudio Acoustics M3FX (THX) and M4+ speakers.
Andy Munro said: "These rooms sound fantastic because we have installed a completely customised soft-dome Dynaudio Acoustics monitoring system – the first time we have ever used a system of this kind in such large mixing theatres. Advances in digital control systems have made this type of monitoring a real possibility and we are delighted that both Shepperton and its clients are so pleased with the results."
The new mixing theatres officially opened at the beginning of 2002 and are already attracting external bookings. They are currently being used by an external client who is dubbing animated films into a variety of foreign languages for theatrical, video and DVD distribution in specific territories.
