Telegraph Media Group Invests In Video Streaming

Telegraph Media Group (TMG) has announced a substantial new investment in live video streaming facilities.
The publisher has been working to expand its live online video coverage for its audience. The media outlet has been working with Garland Partners Limited to assist the organisation with this evolution of its product offering.
Looking to enhance its online live video presence for its news, sports, political, and entertainment content, The Telegraph has invested in the technology needed to allow live video streaming. This investment lets the media outlet broadcast not only to its website, but also to its audience using iPads and through iPhones.
In addition, Telegraph reporters can send feed directly from the news source back to the outlet’s studio. Wearing backpacks containing a device that allows them to transmit high-quality video live across 3G networks, reporters can get breaking news out faster.
"The Telegraph is using LU70 backpack devices from LiveU," explains Malcolm Harland, Director of UK-based Garland Partners. "These are the same devices that were used so successfully by over 40 media outlets this summer to provide unique and immediate coverage of the London 2012 Olympics. They truly are the device that is changing the face of media."
James Weeks, head of video at the Telegraph said in a statement: "Digital consumers expect a first-class video service, and the Telegraph is leading the field. We’ve been quick to recognise the opportunities that new technology presents. Now, we can follow developing stories like never before. The changes we have made to our studio will enable us to augment live video with expert analysis and informed opinion from the finest team of journalists and commentators in the business."
Garland Partners has been helping the Telegraph develop the architecture of the workflow surrounding live video streaming, and has assisted with the installation and commissioning of all equipment.
In addition to the LiveU device, the Telegraph is using technology from Garland Partners’ supplier Teracue. An ENC-200 compact, pure hardware encoder from Teracue allows for live video contribution, with the DEC-200 decoder receiving remote live feeds in real-time over the public internet. The high performance streaming platform provided by Garland Partners allows for high-definition live delivery to web, mobile and tablet devices.
The Telegraph is also taking live feed from BT Tower in London to incorporate news content from the Associated Press’ media hub service. The Telegraph can mix this feed with local content from its studio or from LiveU and Teracue devices, and then push the content to the streaming encoder for delivery.
"The Telegraph is making exciting use of the latest technology," states Harland. "The organisation is leading the industry in breaking out of the traditional boundaries of print media. Video news coverage has moved beyond television, with immediate, live, breaking news coverage being demanded by the huge audience hungry for information."
