Our Experience
Our work spans long-running series like Bad Girls and Silent Witness to recent productions including Scoop and Man vs Baby on Netflix, Hijack and Trying for Apple TV+, and Fleabag for the BBC.
Every project is different, and we adapt to the demands of each one: from working within a live hotel or an operational office building, to studio stages including Shepperton Studios and Ealing Studios.

The finished set is what an audience sees. What shapes it tends to remain invisible: site visits, archive research, technical comparison, and a close understanding of how actors will move through a space and what the construction needs to support. Our latest blog looks at how that research process works in practice, with examples from Cleaner, where early 3D modelling mapped structure and scale before the build began, and Man vs Baby, where the penthouse layout was developed around rehearsal patterns and comic timing.
Alongside the main piece, we've published a conversation with Production Designer Brian Sykes, who has worked with Totom across several productions. Brian begins each project not with what a set should look like, but with the story it needs to tell. His charcoal sketches, drawing on film, literature and landscape, develop atmosphere and mood long before technical decisions are made. For Life on Mars the influence was the oppressive concrete ceilings of All the President's Men. For Out of Her Mind it was Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. In each case, research travels through drawing before it becomes something buildable.

Television comedy is built on familiar spaces. The living room sofa, the kitchen table, the bar where characters gather at the end of the day. Our latest blog explores the set construction behind some of television's most recognisable comedy environments, from productions including Trying, The Good Life: Inside Out, Fleabag and Man vs Baby.
From refurbishing Nikki and Jason's kitchen for Series 4 of Trying to reflect a household that had grown, to recreating the Leadbetters' living room from archive stills alone for the 50th anniversary of The Good Life, to building a complete penthouse interior at OMA Studio X with the layout reverse-engineered around rehearsal and comic timing: the work is always in service of the performance. Totom worked closely with production designers across these productions to build environments where the comedy could land exactly as intended.

Not every set Totom builds is framed for camera. Our latest blog looks at the work that happens beyond the stage — hotel suites that function as real rooms, brand activations inside operational headquarters, parade floats moving through city streets, and retail installations ready for trade by morning. From the freestanding McLaren suite at Hilton, engineered to touch nothing and last months of guest use, to overnight installations at Lush on Oxford Street, the article explores what set construction demands when the audience is live, the venue is operational, and there is no opportunity for visible compromise.Beyond the Studio – Set Construction for Real-World Environments

Sustainability is widely discussed across the TV and film industry, but the real impact often comes from practical decisions made early in production. Our latest blog looks at where those decisions actually happen and how art departments, designers, and construction teams can reduce environmental impact through planning, reuse, and smarter material choices. Drawing on examples shared through the British Film Designers Guild’s Planet Positive Award and wider industry discussions, the article explores how early conversations about design, logistics, and build strategy can significantly reduce waste and unnecessary construction. It also looks at the growing role of reuse networks, prop hire, salvage organisations, and recycling routes that help materials find a second life beyond a single production.
At Totom, we support this approach by working closely with designers and productions to plan builds carefully, reuse materials where possible, and design sets that can be dismantled and redirected into reuse or recycling streams once filming ends.
Sustainability in TV and Film – Where Practical Decisions Are Made

At first glance, the luxury penthouse in Man Vs Baby looks like a real London apartment. In reality, the entire environment was constructed inside a studio, combining carpentry, scenic artistry, and clever material choices to create a believable high-end interior on screen. Our latest blog explores how the set was built, from the sweeping staircase and double-height living room to the marble finishes, gold detailing and scenic techniques used throughout the apartment. The design was developed by Production Designer Stéphane Collonge and constructed by the Totom team to create a space that felt architectural, warm and authentic for the Christmas storyline.
The article looks at how practical construction decisions and scenic finishes combine to create convincing on-screen environments, even when the materials behind the scenes are very different from what the camera suggests.

The Art Department doesn’t work in isolation. Across the industry there are organisations, networks, and events that help designers and technicians stay connected, develop their skills, and share knowledge. Our latest blog highlights several of the key groups supporting the production design community. The article looks at organisations such as the Production Designers Collective, the British Film Designers Guild, the Royal Television Society, and the Production Design Research and Education Network. Each contributes in different ways, from training and mentoring to research, events, and professional advocacy.
We also highlight industry gatherings such as Focus London and the Media Production & Technology Show, which provide opportunities to learn about new technologies, meet collaborators, and stay connected with developments across film and television production.

Virtual Production is becoming an important tool for the art department, working alongside traditional set construction to create convincing on-screen environments. Our latest blog explores how technologies like LED screens and Unreal Engine are being used on film and television productions, and where physical builds are still essential.Using examples from productions such as the Hijack studio set construction, the Cleaner film set construction, and the Haunting of the Queen Mary film sets, the article shows how constructed sets and digital environments can work together. In many cases the physical set provides the structure actors interact with, while Virtual Production screens extend the environment beyond the walls of the stage.
