Italy's Cinecittá Relies On Da Vinci

da Vinci systems has announced that international digital intermediate (DI) production pioneer Cinecittá Digital factory has deployed two da Vinci Resolve R-250 digital mastering suites, two Splice conform stations, and a da Vinci Revival image restoration system for a highly efficient post-production workflow. Linking the Resolve, Splice, and Revival systems to a shared storage area network (SAN) has enabled Cinecittà to perform color grading and damage repair simultaneously, greatly shortening project completion times.
"The da Vinci R-250 always gives you the exact tool you want when you want it," said Fabio Filoni, Head of Digital Services at Cinecittà.
"This is because the system was designed by the people at da Vinci who know DI intimately. Our colorists enjoy using the R-250 because the interface is very familiar to the da Vinci 2K, which they have worked on for many years."
Cinecittà has provided DI post-production since 2001 through its digital services. Now reorganized as Cinecittà Digital Factory, the Rome-based facility is a DI market leader for the Italian film industry, having delivered more than 75 feature films. Currently, Cinecittà Digital Factory has deployed its R-250 system in combination with the Splice conform stations to grade and finish up to four DI feature films per month.
Splice is a versatile, nonlinear post-production appliance that improves workflow by supporting the Resolve as a standalone station. Splice automates layoff of variously versioned deliverables and provides conform functions.
The speed of the da Vinci-based workflow surprised even Cinecittà's veteran colorists, who were able to complete grading in a very short time if needed.
At Cinecittà Digital Factory, material is ingested through a scanner and into a SAN, which is augmented by nearline storage to create 180 terabytes of storage. The SAN is networked with the R-250 and to a Revival that is used for dust-busting and damage repair.
A digital film recorder completes the DI pipeline.
"Cinecittà boasts both a historical and an innovative and forward-looking approach to technology and a dedication to high quality that is totally consistent with its reliance on da Vinci products," said Dean Lyon, Director of Marketing at da Vinci. "As a result, Cinecittà has earned its place as an acknowledged leader in the Italian and global marketplace."
