WWII Backdrop For BBC Drama

News Image
Filming for a new BBC World War II drama is now underway with scenes being shot in Northern Ireland this week before heading to the sunnier setting of Jamaica for the next location.
London-based Ruby Films is shooting the ambitious two-part adaptation of Andrea Levy's award-winning novel, which will be broadcast in the autumn.
The storyline beats a path from the heat and hustle of life in 1940s Jamaica to the devastation of London in the Blitz. Set against the backdrop of the Second World War, in a time when landlords would put up signs that read 'No Irish, no coloureds, no dogs', it follows the interlocking lives of Queenie, her Jamaican lodger, his wife and Queenie's husband.
Ruby Films used the studio facilities of the Paint Hall, a historic building in the Titanic Quarter of Belfast.
It was once the main Harland and Wolff painting hall and includes a large indoor space and is currently on licence to Northern Ireland Screen, having been used extensively for City of Ember, the 2008 big screen movie starring Bill Murray.
For outdoor locations, this week's filming also meant that a Co Down seaside village was remodelled with Portaferry in Co Down going back in time with the picturesque fishing village standing in yesterday for a 1940s Yorkshire village during wartime.
About 120 people in all arrived in the normally sleepy location for the production, closing the square off for the action.
But yesterday evening at 5pm, everything was quickly restored back to normal as Portaferry fast-forwarded back to the 21st century again.
The war-time sandbags, authentic period awnings on shops, tape on windows as there would have been during the war years and even a phone box morphed into a large air shelter had all gone, as had the American GIs and other characters.
