Top Cinematographers Award For Miller

The British Society of Cinematographers has this month honoured Stan Miller of Rosco with the Bert Easy Technical Award for his contribution to Lighting Technology, at the BSC Operators Night at Elstree Film Studios on December 14th.
Stan Miller, who has owned the Rosco company since 1958 was travelling in Asia and asked Michael Hall to accept the Award on his behalf.
Michael was introduced by Joe Dunton, Executive Vice President of Panavision, who spoke of new Rosco products being widely used in film today.
Michael spoke of the 50 years of Rosco involvement in the industry, starting with the development of lighting filters for Mole Richardson Brute arc lights in 1959.
Stan Miller and Rosco's style is to listen to the needs of lighting professionals, have a creative dialogue and then develop products – this has resulted in four Academy Awards starting in 1974, for the ‘development of a complete system of light control materials for motion picture photography’.
Several more Academy Awards followed, including one for the development of safe fog fluids in 1979.
In 1999 the CalColor Effects Filters was the subject of another Award for ‘improved Colour Control in motion picture lighting’ followed in 2001 for the Rosco Day/Night backdropsfor features and episodic TV around the world.
All the products have started this way, Vittorio Storaro, AIC, ASC, wanted a diffusion that didn’t rattle in the wind for the Last Emperor – this was the stimulus for Silent Frost, other 'Silent' products resulted.
So the Technical Award, although to Stan Miller and Rosco was made possible by the ongoing dialogue, ideas and support from the industry which enables Rosco to make their contribution.
