Teaching Through Celluloid At Foyle Film Festival

The 19th Seagate Foyle Film Festival will bring education into the classroom and cinemas for local Derry City school pupils to learn from and enjoy.
Primary, secondary and further education pupils will have the opportunity to view films - they can even have the silver screen brought to their own classroom.
The organisers have done their homework and are sure to get top marks for the selection of films being shown in the Education strand of the 19th Seagate Foyle Film festival. Workshops, presentations and talks by film industry professionals will also be on offer.
Screenings will take place throughout the festival (November 10-19) in the Strand Multiplex, Nerve Centre and in schools - by advance booking - through the special Education Outreach programme.
Film highlights in the Education strand include the beautifully animated 'Laura's Star', the touching story of a young Mongolian nomad and her newfound friend in 'The Cave of The Yellow Dog', and the heartwarming 'The Ant Bully' eaturing the voices of Julia Roberts, Nicholas Cage and Meryl Streep.
The Outreach Programme has a vast amount of choice for schools, with packages to suit various Key Stages, subjects and age groups.
Obvious highlights are 'Paper Clips' which is an illuminating take on Holocaust education; 'An Inconvenient Truth' sees Al Gore delivering the sobering reality of climate change; 'The Wind That Shakes The Barley' focuses on the lead up to the Irish Civil War of 1922 and 'Akeelah And The Bee' is an inspiring story based on an 11-year-old school pupil with a rare talent.
Special Guest Events will offer pupils will offer pupils the unique opportunity to compose their own film score under the guidance of Composer Graeme Stewart; learn from the Northern Ireland Music Industry Commission (NIMIC) how to 'Do It Yourself' in the music world; get the low down on writing and producing for children's drama with BAFTA and Emmy award winning Producer/Writer Peter Tabern; and glimpse into the world of genius that is Stanley Kubricks work with a Q&A session with his life-long producer Jan Harlan.
