               'Red Road' goes to Cannes
Scottish Screen has announced that the first feature film from writer/director Andrea Arnold, 'Red Road', has been chosen for competition at the Cannes International Film Festival next month.
Arnold first came to public attention last year when 'Wasp', a short film she also wrote and directed won an Oscar.
'Red Road' is the first in a triumvirate of films under the Zentropa’s Advance Party initiative, supported by Scottish Screen National Lottery funding and produced for Sigma films by Carrie Commerford.
'Red Road', starring Kate Dickie, Martin Compston and Tony Curran tells the story of Jackie, a CCTV operator who watches over and protects the people she sees on her monitors, regarding them almost as family. But one day she spots a man on her screen she had hoped never to see again.
Claire Chapman, head of Talent & Creativity at Scottish Screen is delighted the film has been chosen for Cannes. She said: “It is a remarkable achievement from Andrea, as a first time feature writer/director, and Carrie as a first time feature producer, to have their film chosen to compete in such a prestigious international festival. We at Scottish Screen could not be more pleased and we are sure that audiences will love the film, it has a wonderful script, sensitively directed with some outstanding performances from the young cast. I am really excited about Red Road competing in Cannes.” (CD)
