GRANADA CINEMA LISTED AS GRADE 1 BUILDING
ARTS MINISTER Alan Howarth announced yesterday his decision to ‘list’ 32 cinema buildings for the first time and upgrade eight others.
Arts Minister Alan Howarth joined English Heritage Chairman, Sir Neil Cossons, and local school children from St Anselm’s primary at the former Granada in Tooting, England’s first ever cinema building to be listed as a Grade 1 building.
He announced the listing of a further 32 cinema buildings and the upgrading of a further eight.
The extra protection follows a survey of historic ‘picture palaces’ by English Heritage, the government’s statutory advisors on the historic environment.
The Granada, a creation of Sidney Bernstein, was opened in 1931. Its spectacular Shakespearian Gothic style interior was designed by the Russian émigré, Theodore Komisarjevsky, and it boasts a giant auditorium, a breathtaking foyer and a seemingly unending ‘Hall of Mirrors’.
The cinemas’ addition to the list brings the total number of English cinema buildings currently listed to 155.
