DGP ships first PAL originated UMD project for Universal Pictures UK

DGP, the Soho based DVD and post production facility has landed another first, this time shipping the first PAL originated UMD (Universal Mini Disc) project for Universal Pictures UK Ltd.
Universal Pictures UK Ltd. and DGP have enjoyed a successful working relationship for a number of years, producing a variety of cross-genre DVDs. Working with the Studio to produce one of their first UMD releases was a natural step for both parties, and DGP welcomed the opportunity to re-work Eddie Izzard: Definite Article for UMD release.
While the brief was for the UMD to reflect the existing DVD product, the new format demanded that the design and programming were completely re-worked to take advantage of the new possibilities available and technical requirements of the new Playstation Portable (PSP) player.
In addition to learning and applying the new systems associated with producing UMD titles, the tight turnaround required for this title was challenging. Katy Deegan, Producer at DGP, notes: “The project required a great deal of concentrated focus by the technical team at DGP and by Universal. Working in such close collaboration with Universal on this title ensured production obstacles could be overcome and the ship date maintained, whilst experiencing a huge learning curve in terms of the technology involved. The experience has been hugely positive on all levels, we are very happy with the finished result, and the technical achievements we can count along the way.”
DGP are no strangers to embracing new technology and their recent forays into the world of DVD Extra (Zoo Tech) and Hi-Definition DVD (as a member of Sonic’s HDAA), has given them the level of confidence required to undertake such projects as UMD releases.
Already working on their next batch of UMD titles, DGP are keen to retain their stronghold in the advance of new technologies within the DVD and new media industry.
