Students’ Film Festival at the Riverfront marks 40th year of IFSW

Marking 40 years of film-making at the International Film School Wales (IFSW), a selection of the students’ best films will be shown before the main feature films scheduled at the Riverfront arts centre in Newport over the next two months.
Gethin While, Media Development Manager at IFSW said: “The Just For Starters festival will feature the cream of our student graduation films.
“They will include comedy, drama, documentary and animation – so there’s something for everyone.
“We’re also staging a showcase of all the prize-winning films from our 2005 Student Awards – again at the Riverfront, on the 19th October – which is free to all, so we hope lots of people will come to that as well.”
On Monday 12 & Tuesday 13 September 2005, the award-winning 'White English Men' (2004) a documentary by Andrew Oxley was screened.
The forthcoming Just for Starters programme includes:
  • Monday 19 & Tuesday 20 September 2005, 7.45pm.
    'Dust' (2003) a short animation film by Keith James-Harrison in which a boy escapes the humdrum reality of everyday life through his toys.
  • Monday 26 & Tuesday 27 September 2005, 7.45pm.
    'The Goddess' (2003) by Elisa Parolo & Giulia Fabbri. This Italian language film with English subtitles tells a haunting story about magical water, an orphan grieving for her mother and the deep love of a true friend.
  • Monday 3 & Tuesday 4 October 2005, 7.45pm.
    Sex ‘n Drugs & Rock ‘n Bass (2003) by Lee Bhogal & David Davis. A short and witty drama looking at what happens when etiquette breaks down at a “mad” party and the unexpected chain of reactions and situations which ensue.

  • Monday 10 & Tuesday 11 October. 7.45pm.
    'Falling' (2004) An animation film by Petra Rossi in which a couple struggle to get back together when the laws of physics start to act strangely.
  • Monday 17 & Tuesday 18 October, 7.45pm.
    Attack of the Giant Killer Robot (2005) by James Allchurch. An animation film paying playful homage to ‘50s science-fiction B-movies and the comic book genre.
  • Monday 24 & Tuesday 25 October 7.45pm.
    Milk (2005) An animation film by Ginny Robertson about a cheeky cat whose cunning plan to steal milk comes unstuck.
  • Monday 31 October & Tuesday 1 November, 7.45pm.
    Shadi in the Beautiful Well (2003) Multi-award-winning film by Mahdi Fleifel & James Spink. [Arabic with English subtitles]. A sensitive but humorous story about Shadi, an autistic boy living in the Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon. Winner DM Davies Short Film Prize (Wales, 2003); Winner Best Foreign Short Drama, Ivy League Student Film Festival 2004 ; Winner Best Film, Ffresh – National Student Film Festival of Wales, 2003.

On Wednesday 19 October, from 2pm to 4pm there will be a special screening of Newport’s Finest Films 2005 showcasing the International Film School Wales graduating students film, animation and documentary work.
While free, tickets will be required for entry, and school parties should also contact Sandra Veasey by phone on 01633 432299 to book.
Refreshments will be served immediately before the screening and free DVDs of all the Finest Films 2005 will be given to the audience at the end of the show.
