Isle of Man launch UK's first permanent lighting exhibition
The UK's first permanent Lighting Exhibition has opened at the Gaiety Theatre, Douglas, in the Isle of Man.
The old projection room at the rear of the upper circle has been transformed to house original dimming, operational equipment and lanterns from throughout the twentieth century. It is complemented by the Gaiety original cinematic stock.
Famous for a highly acclaimed classical restoration of its auditorium, foyer and exterior, the theatre has decided to honour the more technical side. "It seemed only natural to present an exhibition of this nature as the Gaiety is important historically as well as a live venue," said Mervin Stokes, theatre manager.
The Bank of Ireland F-Sharp exhibition includes a 44 way Grand Master (1944), originally from the Fortune Theatre, along with the theatre's original Tempus M24 - now back in use as an exhibit - but which will also act as a console (along with two act six dimmers) to operate the lanterns.
