Film London reports record growth in location filming in capital

London film and media production is booming, according to Film London statistics, which show a 10% increase in location filming in the capital last year.
The figures demonstrate that London has successfully consolidated its position as the third busiest film production centre in the world against concerted international competition.
The record increase in location shooting on the capital’s streets has been attributed in part to the increased co-operation between the production industry and London’s boroughs and agencies, which has been at the centre of the work of Film London since its inception in 2003.
The total number of shooting days on the streets of London in 2004 was 10,683, 954 higher than in 2003 (9,729). On average there are now almost 30 crews shooting in the capital every single day of the year.
Several London boroughs have experienced major increases in their location activity: Westminster (London’s most filmed borough) witnessed a 16% increase; Southwark has seen a 34% increase; both Hackney and Hammersmith & Fulham a 36% growth in activity; and Greenwich a staggering 57% increase in location shooting in 2004.
Adrian Wootton, Chief Executive of Film London, said: “We are delighted that London has risen to the challenge in the highly competitive world market for location filming. This level of growth demonstrates that Film London is having a real impact, and that with the support of the UK Film Council, Mayor and the London Development Agency and the increased co-operation between the industry, London Boroughs and agencies, London is able to further develop its reputation as a world film city.”
