REPORT ASSESSES S4C'S CONTRIBUTION TO ECONOMY

A report that examines welsh broadcaster S4C's contribution to the Welsh economy has been published.
Commissioned by S4C, and written by the Welsh Economic Research Unit based at Cardiff University and University of Glamorgan, the report quantitatively assesses the impact of S4C's activities on the regional economy.
Huw Jones, Chief Executive at S4C, said: "In many ways it is much easier to assess our contribution to culture, to broadcasting or to other aspects of life in Wales. This is the first attempt to examine the economic impact that we make in communities across Wales.
"The report demonstrates that although S4C directly employs only 204 (FTE) jobs, a further 1771 are generated by our activities. These include directly supported jobs with independent production companies, sub-contractors and performers and also indirectly supported jobs in retail, financial and professional services. For every direct job at S4C and their supplying independents, a further 2.1 jobs are generated in Wales.
"But the impact goes far beyond simply jobs. The existence of S4C creates a demand for many different skills. By investing in the creative industries, S4C is also investing in communities across Wales. In total 85 per cent of S4C's total spending is in Wales with 41 per cent in Objective One areas.” (CD)
