Engineering Live Video Infrastructure For Peak Moments
Video-on-demand catalogues can scale gradually; live streams cannot. Audiences flood in just before kick-off, the opening set or the first map, and they all hit the same feeds simultaneously. Infrastructure dimensioned around a daily average may look fine until the moment that counts, then fail in public. If your platform centres on sport, esports, concerts or conferences, set requirements from that spike-shaped demand curve, not a checklist of features.
At kick-off, the key metric is concurrent viewers, not total hours watched. Test what happens at ten times your normal concurrency and whether the system degrades gracefully—stepping viewers down the ABR ladder—or collapses and takes the stream with it. A supplier who can only describe the average day has not engineered for yours.
Ask for a latency budget, not a single latency figure. Delay is additive: encoding, transport, packaging and the last mile each contribute. A lone number on a spec sheet usually reflects one stage, often the most flattering. Request a per-stage breakdown that shows where each second goes. A second-screen statistic that lags the play it describes is as often a packaging or last-mile issue as an encoder one. DVEO explains the breakdown in How to Reduce Latency in Live Video Delivery.
Between venue and platform sits a network you do not control. SRT mitigates packet loss and jitter and reorders packets on that path, which is why it has become the default for venue-to-platform contribution. DVEO's Dozer SRT gateway supports point-to-point and point-to-multipoint, encrypts traffic between units with AES-128, and interoperates with other vendors' SRT devices—vital when the on-site encoder is not yours. Where venues still run SDI, an SDI-to-IP contribution encoder such as Premio—available in 1, 4 and 8-channel models—brings the feed onto IP in H.264 or H.265.
Capacity should follow the event calendar. Transcoding demand is lumpy—quiet for days, then three fixtures on one weekend. Insist on multi-resolution output for HLS and DASH, input failover so a dropped source does not end the stream, and API control so your own tooling can automate channel setup. Brutus Cloud offers all three. For sizing—how many channels, which codec, and whether AI workloads share the hardware—see GPU-Based Video Processing: When Does It Make Sense? It is the same hardware line that sister company 1Legion runs for real-time transcoding and AI-powered media processing.
You also need visibility while the issue is unfolding. When a stream degrades at kick-off, the crucial question is which stage is failing. Demand real-time telemetry from encode through delivery, not a retrospective report. Without it, the origin blames the network, the network blames the origin, and the match ends before anyone agrees. Stream Republic, DVEO's sister company, delivers to broadcasters and telcos in Europe and Latin America with real-time QoS monitoring for exactly that reason.
Talk to an engineer about mapping your event calendar to the transcoding capacity it actually requires.
