BBC Comedy And Liverpool Film Office Launch Script Development Project

BBC Comedy and Liverpool Film Office have launched a new script development initiative aimed at finding and nurturing the next generation of comedy talent from Liverpool and the surrounding region.

The BBC Comedy Liverpool Script Development project follows the success of the BBC Comedy Festival, which was held in Liverpool in May. The initiative forms part of the wider BBC Comedy Script Partnership Project and is focused on developing new sitcom ideas from emerging writers and writer-performers.

The project will support bold, character-led comedy concepts that reflect Liverpool’s distinctive humour, communities and sense of place.

Funded by BBC Comedy in partnership with Liverpool Film Office through the LCR Production Fund, the scheme is intended to help emerging writers develop projects with the potential to become future sitcoms, while also supporting the region’s established comedy sector.

Applications are now open, with writers invited to submit original, accessible 30-minute comedy concepts that demonstrate a strong and distinctive comic voice.

Five projects will be selected for development. At least one of the successful projects will receive additional tailored support, which could include commissioning a second script, a table read, or the production of a taster tape or short film, depending on the project’s requirements.

The initiative is also designed to build on the momentum generated by this year’s BBC Comedy Festival and strengthen opportunities for comedy talent across the region.

The deadline for applications is Monday 9 November 2026.

Five projects will be commissioned for development by the end of October 2026, with successful teams expected to deliver final script drafts by the end of March 2027.
