LED Studio Upgrades

The first step in an LED upgrade is to separate what works from what does not. That clarity helps steer the budget towards changes that will show up on camera and lighten the crew's daily workload.

Start by asking the production team what slows them down. Are they struggling to source lamps and ballasts, to achieve even desk illumination, or to re-aim fixtures every time a standing segment is added? Then align those answers with the upcoming production slate. A plan built around two seated presenters will need revisiting if interviews, demonstrations or larger presentation areas are on the way.

Create a basic inventory covering model, condition, mounting position, power, controls and accessories, along with each fixture’s intended role. This gives a lighting designer a valuable brief and helps avoid buying new gear purely to match the old fixture count.

If your studio’s equipment is compatible, a fluorescent-to-LED retrofit can extend the life of existing fixtures. This is a reminder to evaluate infrastructure as well as luminaires. If access, positioning or control is hindering production, swapping light sources alone may leave the same bottlenecks. Where the room infrastructure is already suitable, the scope may be far more modest. Let the condition of the space and your production needs determine how far the overhaul should go.

Compare complete project costs side by side, including installation labour, access equipment, control changes and commissioning. Build in time to focus lights, check camera angles and train the crew on the finished system.

Be realistic about energy savings. Calculate actual fixture wattage and operating hours against your electricity rate, noting that an all-day studio has different savings potential from a room used for a weekly programme. New fixtures can unlock further efficiencies with low-voltage power and control options such as PoE and the AV/720 with DMX. Retaining compatible accessories can also trim replacement purchases. An itemised inventory makes this discussion far more meaningful than a broad-brush percentage claim.

Plan backwards from the next production date. Decide when fixtures come down, when testing occurs and whether the studio must remain operational throughout. If retrofitting, cycling through a few fixtures at a time can be strategic; Brightline provides DIY videos to support this approach.

If the upgrade is phased, test old and new fixtures together on camera. Check skin tones, dimming behaviour and coverage for the actual shots, and allow time to fine-tune lighting and camera settings before the first recording or broadcast.
