Colorfront And Qumulo Join Forces

Qumulo and Colorfront, the Academy and Emmy Award‑winning developer of Transkoder and On‑Set Dailies, have announced a strategic tie‑up aimed at fixing a long‑standing post‑production headache: the detailed shot metadata created on set rarely survives intact to the teams who need it downstream.

The companies showcased their joint work at IBC 2026, running 9–14 September in Amsterdam.

The challenge is simple but costly. Modern productions generate extensive metadata per frame — covering camera model, sensor mode, resolution, frame rate, lens and focal length, aperture, focus distance, timecode, scene and reel IDs, colour intent (ASC CDL and LUTs), framing intent, audio sync points, script notes, circle takes, VFX flags and more. Yet this information often fractures across camera headers, sidecar files, ALEs, EDLs, spreadsheets and local project databases. Each hand‑off — from set to dailies, editorial, VFX and finishing — risks loss or manual transcription. When an assistant editor is asked to locate a specific subset of shots, the task can devolve into hours of manual scrubbing.

The operational impact can be severe. If 20 artists work overnight and each needs 15–20 minutes of an assistant’s time twice per hour to retrieve frames, 10–13 hours can disappear in a single night. Scaled across a year and multiple pipelines, studios can waste millions — not counting rework when incorrect material is delivered.

Colorfront and Qumulo are addressing this by writing authoritative metadata into the media file itself and then making that file natively searchable. Colorfront’s Transkoder and On‑Set Dailies ingest camera originals from all major manufacturers, read what the camera recorded, and add far more during processing: colour transforms and ACES pipelines, ASC CDL and LUT choices, HDR and Dolby Vision metadata, framing decisions, audio sync, plus AI‑derived insights in the 2026 releases, such as text detection and automated QC findings (e.g., clipped highlights, crushed blacks and judder).

Historically, this enriched context was pushed into deliverables and sidecars, where its utility degraded over time. Qumulo’s answer is NeuralSearch, a storage‑native search capability within the Qumulo Data Platform that continuously indexes file metadata as it lands — with no external crawler or separate search stack — and supports SQL, natural‑language and semantic queries directly against the filesystem.

In the new workflow, Transkoder writes discovered and derived metadata into Qumulo user metadata on the file object itself via the Qumulo Core REST API. Qumulo’s indexer then promotes these values into typed, queryable columns during its normal pass. The result: metadata becomes an intrinsic property of the media, is carried by the filesystem across copies, moves and tiering, and is searchable the moment it is written — immediately shaving thousands of hours from overnight operations across the ecosystem.

What this means in practice is that retrieval turns from browsing to querying:
• Instant dailies: requests constrained by unit, shoot day and circle‑take flags resolve to accurate selections in seconds instead of hours of assembly.
• VFX pulls: criteria such as lens choice, flags (e.g., green‑screen), resolution thresholds and pull status return not just the plates but also the colour transforms and framing data the vendor needs — so pulls arrive complete, not as filename lists to chase.
• Conform and finish: shots can be located via recorded colour and framing decisions rather than reconstructing intent from EDLs and folders.
• Archive and reuse: material from past productions remains as discoverable as footage captured today because the searchable context travels with the frames, not a transient project file.
