Jeopardy! And Wheel Of Fortune Upgrade Communications Systems
Television game show productions Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune have upgraded their wireless communications infrastructure with Clear-Com® FreeSpeak systems, introducing expanded coverage and enhanced flexibility designed to support the demands of their long-running productions.
The upgrade was implemented after the two iconic shows sought a more reliable communications solution capable of supporting production teams operating across complex studio environments. Audio Masterpiece's Gary Vahling, a veteran of the professional audio industry since the early 1990s, served as the lead systems Partner for the project. Vahling oversaw extensive testing and validation efforts before deployment, with the aim of reducing risk and ensuring operational reliability.
Chris Savage, Technical Manager and project lead for both productions, led the system design and installation process. "Both shows share a control room but have stages that are effectively miles apart due to walls, pathways, and even parking lots," Savage explained. "We needed a system that could handle extensive travel between the control room and the stages without a single dropout, and that’s exactly what we achieved."
The production team for Wheel of Fortune required a more flexible communications setup with expanded channel capacity to support a technically experienced crew and growing monitoring requirements. To meet those needs, Clear-Com deployed a combination of FreeSpeak II® and FreeSpeak Icon™ systems, incorporating Bluetooth-enabled beltpacks intended to simplify operation for all users, including non-technical personnel.
Jeopardy! also required reliable and streamlined communications to support its fast-paced production environment, where timing, contestant coordination and precise cueing play critical roles. The wireless system was designed to provide dedicated coverage across stage and production areas, enabling continuous communication among crew members during tapings.
The upgraded communications platform now supports 30 FreeSpeak II beltpacks and six Icon beltpacks across both productions, while also allowing straightforward intersystem connectivity.
The installation additionally introduced Arcadia® Central Station, enabling interoperability with existing Dante-enabled audio networks. The configuration allows lighting and PA crews to continue operating legacy FreeSpeak II beltpacks while also benefiting from the additional functionality offered by FreeSpeak Icon.
