Alan Meyerson Turns To DPA Microphones

Recording engineer and mixer Alan Meyerson has expanded his immersive orchestral recording workflow with DPA Microphones, utilising the company's 4041 Large Diaphragm Omnidirectional Microphones as a core component of a recent orchestral recording project.

Known for his work on projects including 'Dune', 'Jedi: Fallen Order', 'Gladiator' and numerous other film and music productions, Meyerson recently recorded and later mixed Nico Cartosio's latest album.

For the project, he sought an immersive recording approach designed to deliver clarity, depth and emotional impact while maintaining phase coherence throughout the orchestral capture process.

Meyerson built the setup around DPA’s 4041 microphones, positioning them as an immersive array above a traditional Decca Tree configuration. The recording system combined a classic left-center-right Decca Tree arrangement with outriggers, while the DPA microphones served as an immersive layer intended to maximize imaging precision and phase consistency.

The approach allowed Meyerson to blend traditional and immersive recording methods while preserving timing alignment across the microphone arrays.

"I recently got quite into DPA microphones; once I started working with the DPA 4041, I realized there was something very special about them," Meyerson declared. "I wanted the DPAs to align with the Decca Tree mics so there wasn’t any time delay if I wanted to use them both. That way, I had the ability to blend the two worlds without introducing phase issues."

The use of immersive recording techniques continues to grow across orchestral and film music production, with engineers increasingly seeking solutions that provide detailed spatial imaging while maintaining the sonic characteristics associated with traditional recording methods.
