Rebecca Hawkes Awarded Honorary Degree

Rebecca Hawkes, Head of Studios at Elstree Studios in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, has been awarded an honorary degree by Middlesex University during the institution’s 2026 Graduation Week celebrations.

The honour was presented at a special ceremony on June 22 in recognition of Hawkes’ contributions to the film and television industry, as well as her work supporting education, skills development and stronger connections between academia and the creative sector.

As Head of Studios at Elstree Studios, Hawkes oversees all studio operations and has played a role in supporting a range of internationally recognized film and television productions, including major franchises and award-winning projects. Under her leadership, Elstree Studios has continued to strengthen its reputation as one of the UK’s leading production centres while balancing its historic legacy with evolving technology and industry innovation.

Hawkes, who lives in Muswell Hill in North London, has also been a prominent advocate for education and workforce development within the creative industries. She has established partnerships with universities and training organizations and has supported initiatives designed to encourage young people to explore careers in film and television.

Her work has focused particularly on expanding access and inclusion while helping students connect academic learning with industry experience through mentorship, workshops and professional engagement opportunities.

Commenting on receiving the honorary degree, Hawkes said: "Receiving this award is a truly special moment for me. To be recognised for my contribution to the creative industries, and for helping to strengthen the connection between industry and academia, is incredibly meaningful.
