BBC SET STANDARDS FOR VISUALLY IMPAIRED VIEWERS
THE BBC have published guidelines explaining how programme makers can ensure that licence fee payers who may be blind or partially sighted can still enjoy BBC television programmes.
The guidelines - Text on Screen for Visually Impaired Viewers - have been in use in the BBC for over two years. They include advice on graphics, information and use of foreign language contributions.
They were drawn up in conjunction with the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) as part of the BBC’s response to the Disability Discrimination Act and their commitment to improving services to disabled licence fee payers.
Mark Byford, the BBC’s diversity champion on their Executive Committee, said: "The BBC are committed to ensuring that their programmes and services are as accessible as is reasonably possible to disabled people. These guidelines have worked well for the past two years and we now publish them so that audiences can call us to account and also as ‘best practice’ for the rest of the industry." (CD)
