Hatton Garden Drama Commissioned For ITV

ITV has confirmed the commission of a new drama depicting the Hatton Garden burglary which took place in London in April 2015.

The robbery made headlines after an elderly gang of career criminals carried out the heist across the Easter Bank Holiday weekend in 2015, stealing jewellery and cash from the premises within London's diamond district.

The 4x60' drama will be written by Jeff Pope and Terry Winsor, and directed by Paul Whittington. It will shed light on how the criminal gang meticulously planned the raid of the vault of Hatton Garden Safety Deposit Company, the tensions within the group, the loss of livelihoods suffered by the box holders, and the complex police operation to capture the guilty parties.

Timothy Spall OBE, Kenneth Cranham and Brian F. O'Byrne will play leading roles in the series and will be joined by David Hayman, Alex Norton, Ian Puleston-Davies, Geoff Bell and Nasser Memarzia. Filming commences this month.

Hatton Garden has been commissioned for ITV by Head of Drama, Polly Hill, with ITV's Senior Drama Commissioner Victoria Fea overseeing the production from the broadcaster's perspective. The series will be produced by Imogen Cooper with Jeff Pope as co-executive producer alongside Terry Winsor. Jonathan Levi from Renegade Pictures is acting as a consultant on the drama.

Jeff Pope, Head of Factual Drama, ITV Studios, said: "This is one of the most high profile crimes of the last decade and we wanted to understand what had happened – and why it had happened. The research threw up some fascinating detail and blew away many of the misconceptions about this story. It was not about a bunch of 'loveable old blokes', many box holders lost everything in the raid and we will reflect this. But the planning was clever and the characters involved unique."
