New Superman Drama To Be Filmed In Belfast

News Image
Details have been announced regarding the first production to be housed in the new Belfast Harbour Studios.

Krypton, which is a Superman prequel, is due to begin pre-production in the city this month, with a shoot date of late summer.

The series is set two generations before the destruction of the Man of Steel's home planet and follows Superman's grandfather (played by Cameron Cuffe) as he fights to redeem his family's honour and save his world from chaos.

The production from Phantom Four, in association with Warner Horizon Scripted Television for the SyFy channel, also stars local actor Ian McElhinney.

The Belfast Harbour Studios is a £20 million development set on an eight-acre site within the 340-acre Giant's Park. The complex consists of two film studios, workshops which will be used for set construction, and separate production offices to accommodate art departments, dressing rooms and wardrobe functions. The scheme has also been future-proofed to accommodate additional studio and workshop space on an adjoining two-acre site.

David Dobbin, Chairman of Belfast Harbour, said: "Welcoming our first tenant to Belfast Harbour Studios is very exciting for us. Working with NI Screen and hosting visits from many production companies has shown there is a need for a facility like this. We regard our investment in the studios as a good business opportunity for Belfast Harbour and good for the local economy and our rapidly growing media sector. We look forward to working with Warner and further enhancing Northern Ireland’s reputation in the film industry."

Richard Williams, CEO, Northern Ireland Screen, added: "We are delighted to welcome Warner Horizon to Northern Ireland. Securing Krypton is a real coup for us and cements our position as a world-class filming location with a local and highly skilled crew-base with vast experience. The construction of the new studios by Belfast Harbour has added tremendous value to our overall proposition."
