The Lovers and The Despot will receive its world premiere at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, in the World Cinema Documentary Competition.

The documentary, which is directed by Rob Cannon and Ross Adam, has been produced by Hellflower Films and Tigerlily Productions.

The Lovers and The Despot is a romance-thriller documentary, set against the backdrop of South Korean society in the aftermath of the Korean War. The film tells the story of young film director Shin Sang-ok and actress Choi Eun-hee and how their lives take a bizarre turn when – following kidnap and imprisonment – they are reunited by movie-obsessed Kim Jong-il who declares them his own filmmakers. Having rekindled their love for each other, the couple plain their escape from North Korea.

Ron Cannan and Ross Adam said: "We always hoped this film would find a home at the Sundance Film Festival and couldn't be more thrilled to premiere in the World Documentary Competition."

The film is a BFI Film Fund, Creative England, BBC Storyville, The Documentary Company, Influence Film, ZDF/Arte, NTR (Netherlands) and SVT (Sweden) co-production. Tigerlily Productions is currently in talks with a number of companies regarding international distribution rights.
