Scopus and Akelia co-operate to develop IRD’s

Scopus Network Technologies, supplier of digital broadcasting platforms to the cable and satellite markets, and Akelia Wireless, developer of products for wireless communications applications in the satellite and terrestrial sectors, recently announced their co-operation in the development of a professional Integrated Receiver Decoder (IRD) compliant with emerging DVB-S2 (Digital Video Broadcasting – Satellite) standards.
The joint development project is being partially funded by Britech, the British-Israel Technology Foundation.
The Scopus and Akelia next generation IRD with DVB-S2 technology will enable professional broadcasters to more fully exploit available satellite bandwidth. With improved bandwidth utilization, the new DVB-S2 IRDs will provide broadcasters with increased programming capacity and enhanced geographical coverage to improve their business capabilities.
The new IRDs will target the head-end broadcast site markets for contribution and distribution applications.
The Scopus/Akelia solution will be fully backwards compatible and interoperable with other technologies.
Scopus IRD Product Line Manager Yan Mostovoy said, “DVB-S2 represents the next wave for digital broadcasting and Scopus’ work with Akelia will make sure that we remain at the top of the industry. Britech, created by the British and Israeli governments, is an excellent tool for generating closer cooperation between firms in both countries and our project’s being chosen affirms the value of our technological cooperation.
Akelia Wireless Director of Modem Development Neil McSparron commented, “We are excited to work with Scopus and believe that our skill sets and their capabilities will ensure that the new IRD will lead the market”.
