Amazing Spectacles Helps Ogilvy Dublin Promote Turner Exhibition

Amazing Spectacles' has recently completed work on a 20-second commercial for Ogilvy Dublin, which has been directed by Martyn Pick.
The commercial has been created to promote the Turner exhibition at the National Gallery of Ireland, which runs from January 1 - 31, 2011.
The precious collection of J.M.W. Turner watercolours is only allowed to be displayed for one month a year to ensure its preservation. The condition of the bequest to the gallery by collector Henry Vaughn back in 1900 was that the works could only be removed from their specially built cabinet each January, when the light levels are at their lowest.
Created by Ogilvy Dublin's Laurence O'Byrne and Connor O'Hare, the original music for the commercial was composed by Gavin Little at Echolab, while John Kavanagh provided the voiceover which invites visitors to journey through the light of Turner's watercolours.
After receiving the script from Laurence and Connor at Ogilvy Dublin, Martyn designed a seamless fluid movement which he described as "the camera moving into the cabinet as it open, revealing the watercolours we then travel through continually moving towards the light."
He added: "The watercolours build up as if they're being painted live and captured by a time-lapse camera."
With a tight deadline of just one week to complete the project, the team had to be resourceful. Along with Darren Fereday, a concept artist, Martyn continued to work on the artwork, while Prime Focus 3D artists Paul Baaske and Lucy Luong were brought in to recreate Henry Vaughn's protective cabinet in 3D from reference stills for the opening shot.
To create the sense of the watercolours being painted live, Martyn used a technique that he's developed across several projects he has worked on including his London 2012 (Film London) short film. He said: "Using a digital brush, the pixels are painted and smeared as if they're wet paint. This is a very immediate effect and also provides the right loose expressive touch to apply to work such as these watercolours."
All the elements were then comped together by Jason Guest in After Effects.
