Broadcast Battle For World Cup

News Image
Soccer fever looms across broadcasting this week as the TV channels gear-up to compete themselves - but in this case it is for one of the biggest sporting audiences in the world.
ITV will cover 32 games in high-definition from the World Cup in South Africa - including England's openers against the US and Algeria - following what were described as "long and hard" negotiations with the BBC.
Also, the former BBC star presenter, Adrian Chiles is hoping his fans from The One Show and Match of The Day II will follow him over to ITV's World Cup coverage after he signed a four-year deal there - reportedly worth up to £1.5m a year.
While soccer fans traditionally prefer the BBC, the State-backed channel is going to face stiff competition as it is sharing coverage of other England games with ITV later in the tournament after next week's opening games.
Mr Chiles also confirmed that he would like to work with One Show co-host Christine Bleakley again, though said he did not know whether she would join him on the GMTV sofas or whether she would make the trip to South Africa.
He is to present GMTV five mornings a week in addition to becoming the broadcaster's main football presenter. He will also host a factual entertainment series, which will air in 2011.
