About Mike Drury Jibs Ltd -Jimmy Jib Operator London
I put cameras where they can’t otherwise go. Jimmy Jib is my trade — feature films, television dramas, documentaries, live broadcasts, concerts, EPKs, music videos and commercials.
Thirty enjoyable years of it. This past year I wrapped five series on Call the Midwife with the final shot of the final episode, and have since shot its Christmas special Call the Midwife: Sisters in Arms for the BBC.
I was a partner in the grip and tracking company Off Trax from the mid nineties, then set up Mike Drury Jibs in February 2012. I specialise in supplying and operating Jimmy Jibs, and I also work as an operator on Technocrane, Towercam and gyro-stabilised heads. Car-to-car filming and stunt work have been a regular part of it, and I can provide tracking vehicle, camera car jibbing and Russian Arm work alongside long-standing associates in the field.
Since 2012 I’ve been lucky enough to work with some very good crews on some very good productions. Five series of Call the Midwife for Neal Street Productions, including the final shot of the final episode. The opening shot of series one of Sex Education for Netflix. Feature films including People Just Do Nothing: Big In Japan. And a fair amount of high-adrenaline tracking work on Amazon’s The Grand Tour and the BBC’s Top Gear.
Music is the other side of it, and one I enjoy enormously. I’ve operated Jimmy Jibs, hot heads, Towercams and Technocranes at a great many festivals and concerts, and there’s a particular energy to making music videos — ‘Cry Cry Cry’ for Coldplay, and more recently ‘Free To Love’ for Duran Duran with Nile Rodgers.
I’m based in London and work throughout the UK and internationally.
What you’re actually hiring
Not just the kit. Thirty years of knowing where the crane wants to sit, how long the rig will take, and what a director means when they describe a shot with their hands. On a live multi-camera show there’s no second take, so it helps to have been there before.
It also means keeping up. The gear has changed enormously, and so has the work… formats, tech, expectations. Same hands, current environment.
- Jimmy Jib with full remote head and optional 360° third axis
- MDJ Pro Dolly and track wheel system
- Stainless Steel Moy Track
- Custom Fitted VW Transporter, rigged and ready to go
- Also available as an operator on Technocrane, Russian Arm and tracking vehicles.
The Jimmy Jib
This well known industry-standard camera crane offers endless scope for creating that extra level of production value for any film or TV production. It can be built in many different lengths from 6ft all the way up to 40ft in reach, has a payload that allows it to take most camera and lens combos, can be used with or without track and is easily transported and rigged in unorthodox or harder to reach places that bulkier or heavier crane arms just cannot go.
Tracking Vehicles with Cranes and Stunt Filming
Tracking vehicle work has been a regular source of fun — and a decent physical workout — for more than twenty years.
Over that time I’ve designed and project managed the build of several tracking vehicles with crane arms, and developed a fairly specialist skill set operating on fast-moving stunt sequences, car programmes and commercials.
