Virgin Rapped Over HD Offer

The TV watchdog has ruled that Virgin Media misled consumers with its high-definition offer ahead of the football World Cup.
The television campaign promised customers a one-off set-up charge, at a cost of £49, featuring a voice-over on the ad stating: "With Virgin Media you get amazing HD for no extra monthly fee."
Sky and other providers believed the ad misled new customers who were also required to pay an additional £35 installation fee.
Virgin Media have responded saying the ads made it clear in the small print that new customers would have to pay the standard installation but the Advertising Standards Authority disagreed.
All this comes as Virgin announce a sign up of almost 260,000 new HD TV customers, growing revenues by 7% to £964m in its second quarter.
Average revenue per cable subscriber grew by almost 5% to £45.88, with the number of HD subscribers up by 80% over the period to 1.2m.
Virgin Media also netted 22,300 new TV subscribers, taking its installed base to 3.7m. Around half of all of its subscribers use its video-on-demand service.
