Summit Debuts New Double SmarTmast 3 At Red Bull Air Race

Summit Steel used its new Double SmarTmast 3 structures for the first time as one of three large video screen supports for the London leg of the 2008 Red Bull Air Race.
The new structure has been developed to hang two screens at 90 degrees to one another in a V shape. The Double SmarTmast 3 can go up to 10 metres in height and is suitable for screen sizes of up to 30 square metres in this configuration and up to 52 square metres with an extended base and increased ballast.
On this occasion, the Double SmarTmast 3 was rigged with two 25 square metre Mitsubishi OD10 screens.
The structure is designed to withstand winds up to 50mph and it experienced a strong breeze gusting up to 35mph the day before the race.
It was located on the south side of the River Thames on the Thames path near the O2 Arena, allowing some of the estimated 40,000 live viewers to enjoy the super-fast, jaw dropping antics of the pilots and planes negotiating the Race's course against the spectacular backdrop.
On the north side of the river, Summit erected two of its standard single SmarTmast 3 screen towers, one at Trinity Buoy Wharf and the other at Blackwall Pier. These both supported single 25 square metre OD10 screens - supplied by Diamond Vision, along with the 2 south side screens.
Summit was working for innovision appointed as the national agency to provide all the local site elements for the Red Air Race.
Summit's team of 5 rigged the SmarTmasts over 2 days, including the Blackwall Pier site which had the additional challenge of no direct vehicle access.
