WELSH SCREEN GEMS IN PRODUCTION

ORGANISERS of the Welsh 'Screen Gems' scheme have selected 10 films to go into production from the 180 entries submitted.
With a budget of £180,000, the scheme was launched last November by Sgrin, the Media Agency for Wales, the Arts Council of Wales, British Screen, and Channel 4.
Screen Gems is an innovative scheme that offers opportunities for writers and directors, producers and trainees to produce, edit and shoot a short three-minute film in a professional environment for potential theatrical and broadcast release.
The scheme aims to produce exciting mini-films with cinematic appeal, nurture and develop film-making talent, while addressing some of the acknowledged skills gaps in the industry in Wales.
Five of the films are to be shot on Digital Video, and five on 35mm film, with experienced producers invited to oversee the projects' development.
The eight trainees attached to the 10 films will work with experienced professionals in the areas of film production, camera work and editing.
With many distribution opportunities for the completed Screen Gems films, such as cinema showings, screenings on The Shooting Gallery, FilmFour showings, as well as entry into film festivals and screenings in special showcase events in the UK and internationally, the films are set to form an important showcase for Welsh talent.
The final delivery of the Screen Gems films is expected in September.
