CCG WELCOME UK GOVERNMENT WHITE PAPER

News Image
THE GAELIC Broadcasting Committee (CCG) have welcomed the Government White Paper on Broadcasting and Communications, applauding its specific references to Gaelic broadcasting.
CCG director John Angus Mackay (pictured) said: “It is very gratifying that the White Paper promises that the recommendations of the Milne Report, including a dedicated digital Gaelic channel, will be studied in detail. This heralds a new dawn for a comprehensive broadcasting service that will satisfy the needs of the Gaelic community.”
In another positive development the Culture, Education and Sports Committee of the Scottish Executive have undertaken to examine the funding of Gaelic television and the role of the Gaelic Broadcasting Committee in the development of Gaelic broadcasting over the past decade.
The CCG say the year 2000 ended with mixed reactions from Gaelic audiences. There was disappointment that the daily news programme, ‘Telefios’, was being discontinued, but there was upbeat reaction to the renaissance of Gaelic television drama and particularly to an outstanding CCG-funded drama marking the 50th anniversary of the removal of the Stone of Destiny from Westminster Abbey.
The CCG currently fund 60 percent of Gaelic television programmes produced in Scotland. (GB)
