               BBC News appoints Europe Editor
BBC Director of News, Helen Boaden, has announced that Mark Mardell has been appointed to the new role of Europe Editor.
The post, which will be based in Brussels, is part of BBC News management's recently published response to the Governors' independent report on the BBC's coverage of Europe and the European Union.
The new role is designed to enhance the audience's understanding of the European Union and its institutions, to focus on the evolving role and nature of the EU and what it means for the UK.
Helen Boaden said: "Mark brings great depth of knowledge, tremendous energy and a rare lightness of touch and wit to all of his journalism.
"He has exactly the skills to engage our audiences in this vitally important but difficult area."
Mark Mardell said: "I am delighted to be taking on this new role at a time when the future of the European Union is clearly one of the big news stories.
"I look forward with relish to the challenge of reporting this story as the people and politicians of the European Union debate what sort of place they want Europe to be."
Mardell is currently the BBC's Chief Political Correspondent, reporting mainly for the BBC One 'Ten O'Clock News'.
He has also regularly presented the 'World at One' and Broadcasting House on BBC Radio 4, and appears every Thursday, in a variety of guises, with his round up of the political week in BBC One's 'This Week'.
Since he joined the BBC as a political correspondent in 1988 he has reported the main political stories on the day for 'Newsnight', where he was Political Editor for seven years.
He was educated at Epsom College in Surrey and studied politics at Kent University.
He began his career at Radio Tees on Teesside and Radio Aire in Leeds before moving to Independent Radio News in London, where he became industrial editor.
He made his television debut on Channel 4's 'The Sharp End'.
