BBC Radio 6 Music Unveils Indie Forever Line-Up
BBC Radio 6 Music has detailed the programming and presenter roster for Indie Forever, a new BBC Sounds-only extension launching on Wednesday 22 July.
The continuous 24-hour stream will celebrate the biggest indie pop, rock and classics from the 1980s to the 2010s and beyond, with UK artists comprising 70% of the playlist.
Listeners can expect music from The Stone Roses, Oasis, Blur, Pulp, The Verve, The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, The Killers, Florence + The Machine, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The xx, Wolf Alice, The 1975, Sam Fender, Blossoms and more.
At launch, Indie Forever will feature The Morning Session with Steve Lamacq and Felix White — a nod to Radio 1's landmark Evening Session and the 1990s indie era — alongside Indie Forever Disco with Beth Ditto. There will also be another chance to hear The Rise and Fall (and Rise Again) of Oasis and The Rise and Fall of The Smiths, bespoke City Soundtracks programmes made with Music Venue Trust and BBC Introducing to spotlight scenes across the UK, plus mood-led and themed playlists curated by 6 Music presenters and guests.
The stream will draw on the BBC’s extensive archive, including Liam and Noel Gallagher’s notorious 1997 Evening Session appearance, Oasis’s 1996 Knebworth performance, and classic sessions from Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes and The Smiths.
Weekdays will bring The Morning Session with Steve Lamacq and Felix White, blending stories of the scenes, labels and moments that defined UK indie with themed, nostalgia-tinged tracks. On Fridays and Saturdays, Gossip’s Beth Ditto hosts Indie Forever Disco, serving two hours of floor-filling indie anthems.
City Soundtracks will air Monday to Thursday with 6 Music and BBC Introducing’s Emily Pilbeam, travelling to independent venues nationwide to chart each area’s contribution to UK indie history while spotlighting emerging artists.
The Rise and Fall of The Smiths airs on Saturday 25 July, presented by Steve Lamacq and Elizabeth Alker, telling the band’s story through four decades of BBC material, including rare and unheard recordings. It will be followed by The Smiths Artist Collection, drawing on BBC session tracks from the 1980s, live material from the 1986 Kilburn National and Hammersmith Apollo shows, and programme highlights presented by Johnny Marr and Mike Joyce.
On Sunday 26 July, The Rise and Fall (and Rise Again) of Oasis — presented by Steve Lamacq and Jo Whiley — examines the relationship between Liam and Noel Gallagher, with contributions from bandmates, producers and industry insiders. An Oasis Artist Collection follows, including highlights from Knebworth 1996, the band’s 1997 Evening Session interview and Noel Gallagher’s 2001 reflections on the group’s first decade.
Classic editions of Jarvis Cocker’s 6 Music programmes will also return, with his current Someday Service repeated on Saturdays and his Sunday Service (2010–2017) on Sundays, from 1 and 2 August respectively. Across August weekends, Artist Collections will celebrate acts including The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Wolf Alice, The White Stripes and Biffy Clyro.
Each Friday, the stream will simulcast 6 Music’s flagship indie show, Indie Forever, presented by Nathan Shepherd, delivering upbeat classics with a dash of future favourites. Seven days a week, themed or guest-curated Indie Forever Playlists from the 6 Music archive will also feature.
Mood-driven mixes include Indie Chill with Huw Stephens (laid-back acoustic and indie folk), Indie Focus with Lauren Laverne (introspective tracks for concentration) and Indie Cloudbusters with Nick Grimshaw and Nathan Shepherd (an indie twist on the Breakfast Show’s uplifting Cloudbusting feature).
BAFTA-winning actor and comedian Sophie Willan — known for Alma’s Not Normal and as a team captain on Never Mind the Buzzcocks — will voice daily programme trails across Indie Forever.
To mark the launch on Wednesday 22 July, 6 Music will simulcast the first edition of The Morning Session with Steve and Felix, followed by an Indie Forever playlist. The station will celebrate throughout the day, with the pair joining the breakfast show, Sophie Willan guesting on Chris Hawkins (sitting in for Craig Charles), and Emily (sitting in for Huw Stephens) offering a City Soundtracks preview, before an hour of back-to-back indie hits with Nathan Shepherd.
A range of independent production companies from across the UK will make Indie Forever content, reflecting the BBC’s support for creative industries nationwide. City Soundtracks comes from True Thought (West Midlands); Indie Chill and Indie Focus from Audio Always (Salford); Indie Cloudbusters from Bengo Media (Cardiff); The Morning Session with Steve Lamacq and Felix White from Cup and Nuzzle (London); Indie Forever and Indie Forever Playlists continue with We Are Grape (Salford); and Indie Forever Disco is produced by BBC Audio (London).
