DFT Installs Second Polar HQ At China News Film

DFT has completed the installation of a second Polar HQ film scanner at China News Film (CNF) in Beijing, making CNF the first institution in the country to run two 8K film-scanning systems simultaneously.

CNF purchased its first Polar HQ in 2024. After integration and qualification testing, the full production workflow received official approval in 2025, establishing the nation’s first certified 8K film-scanning operation.

Driven by growing demand, CNF opted to expand its scanning capacity. Following a detailed evaluation, the organisation again selected the Polar HQ. The second unit has passed expert certification and is now in full production.

Designed for rigorous archival use, Polar HQ can safely handle damaged, shrunken, and fragile film stocks—scenarios in which many standard high‑resolution scanners are less reliable. Its ability to deliver multi‑format digital outputs without loss of image information makes it well suited to institutions where fidelity to the original is paramount.

Norbert Hinckers, CEO, Digital Film Technology (DFT), said: "China News Film works with material that cannot be replaced. Safe handling of challenging film is exactly what Polar HQ was built for. Purchasing a second system so shortly after qualifying the first – in a project of national significance – is the strongest endorsement we could ask for."

In a recent review of both Polar HQ systems, CNF executives and technical specialists reported strong satisfaction with performance and signalled interest in further collaboration with DFT.
