INFiLED Powers New BBC Studioworks Studio

BBC Studioworks has unveiled a newly enhanced broadcast facility at Television Centre in London, featuring advanced LED technology designed to support the UK’s live National Lottery draws.

The upgraded studio, now home to broadcasts operated by Allwyn, incorporates two high-resolution LED walls supplied by INFiLED. The installation marks a significant step forward in delivering a flexible and reliable production environment for the lottery draws, which air six nights a week.

At the heart of the studio are two 5 x 3 metre DBmk2 Series LED screens with a 1.95 mm pixel pitch. Positioned at a 90-degree angle, the displays create a dynamic backdrop capable of transforming instantly to accommodate multiple lottery games, each with its own visual identity.

The project was developed after Allwyn sought a new, purpose-built broadcast space. BBC Studioworks proposed a solution that would meet the demands of a high-frequency live production schedule while offering creative versatility. The brief required a backdrop that could be easily updated, visually engaging and dependable, with no tolerance for downtime.

Designers also ensured the focus remained on the draw machine, the central feature of each broadcast, with the LED environment enhancing rather than distracting from the presentation.

A key technical challenge involved preventing moiré effects and visual interference on camera. By selecting a fine pixel pitch and applying depth-of-field adjustments alongside optical filtering, the team achieved a clean on-screen image. INFiLED’s Color and Brightness Shift Free (CBSF) technology further supports consistent colour across wide viewing angles.

"We had a tight deadline in transitioning Allwyn to their new home without disrupting their normal six-night-a-week output," said Tim Wood, head of Television Centre at BBC Studioworks. "We had to get it right and ensure everything ran smoothly from night one on this stage."

BBC Studioworks selected the DBmk2 Series for its combination of reliability and performance in broadcast environments, where high resolution, colour accuracy and contrast are critical. The displays are also suited to extended reality and virtual production applications, offering deep contrast through an ultra-black LED surface.

Before finalising the installation, the team carried out extensive in-house testing to ensure the system met their production requirements.

"We were really pleased with the demo panel that was provided by INFiLED, along with technical support from the team," said Wood. "This gave us the opportunity to point our cameras at the screens in our own time to ensure we were able to achieve the look and feel we required. Following this, ordering and receiving the product from INFiLED was so easy."
