Riedel Connects Live Surgery And Global Medical Audiences
Riedel Communications’ Managed Technology Division delivered a turnkey technical infrastructure at the Vienna Interdisciplinary Symposium on Aortic Repair (VISAR) 2025, enabling the live transmission and interactive presentation of complex surgical procedures to an international audience of medical professionals.
The prestigious medical congress took place at the Haus der Industrie in Vienna and connected live operations from multiple operating rooms at Vienna General Hospital with specialists attending the event from around the world. Using a fully integrated Riedel ecosystem, the solution supported real-time video, audio and communication across spatially separated hospital and congress locations.
The deployment centred on Riedel’s Artist and Bolero intercom systems, MediorNet video infrastructure and the SimplyLive Production Suite. Together, the technologies enabled live transmission from three parallel operating rooms to the congress hall, while also facilitating bidirectional communication between surgeons, moderators and attendees.
During the sessions, surgeons demonstrated and compared different approaches to aortic and heart valve surgery, offering the audience direct insight into complex, multi-hour procedures and real-time clinical decision-making.
"The technical requirements of VISAR go far beyond those of a traditional medical conference," said Dr. Martin Funovics, member of the VISAR Executive Committee. "Working with Riedel gave us the confidence that the congress could be delivered reliably in all its complexity."
Riedel was responsible for the complete video, audio, intercom and network infrastructure linking the hospital operating rooms with the congress venue. Artist and Bolero intercom systems were deployed across the project, with wireless Bolero and Bolero S beltpacks provided not only to moderators and technical teams, but also to medical staff inside the operating rooms. This allowed surgeons to communicate directly with the congress hall during live procedures, respond to questions and explain surgical decisions without disrupting workflow.
Intercom signals from the operating rooms were integrated into the congress hall PA system using Riedel StageLink Network Stream Adapters, ensuring clear and audible dialogue for the audience. Riedel’s Bolero Bridge connected individual Bolero networks across the operating rooms with the intercom system at the Haus der Industrie, enabling centralised management across all locations.
The cross-site infrastructure was implemented via a secure IP connection and continuously monitored and supported by the Riedel Remote Operations Center (ROC), ensuring stable and reliable communications under the demanding conditions of a hospital environment.
Live video production in the congress hall was powered by Riedel’s SimplyLive Production Suite, which enabled flexible switching between operating rooms and the playback of replays to highlight surgical techniques and clinical decisions. MediorNet MicroN supported the setup as a central multiviewer, allowing simultaneous monitoring of live surgeries and presentations.
