Calrec's Type R Immerses Radio Students at Canada's Cégep de Jonquière Public College

Internationally recognised for its industry-specialist communications, television and film courses, the Cégep de Jonquière public college in Québec, Canada has upgraded to an AES67 IP infrastructure with the installation of 22 Calrec Audio Type R modular mixing systems, increasing flexibility, reliability and simplifying maintenance.

Aiming to deliver the latest real-world experiences for all its radio students, the installation is part of a total overhaul of its dedicated l’École supérieure en Art et technologie des médias department.

L’École supérieure en Art et technologie des médias of Cégep de Jonquière is the only public school in Québec that offers this kind of professional training and immersion,” says Alexandre Morin, Technician and Project Manager for l’École supérieure en Art et technologie des médias. "It means we can provide 'on air' experience for our radio students, who use Type R to broadcast content in the local area and across the internet, while its versatility gives all our students the best real-world experience."

Working with Calrec's Canadian partner True North A.V., and integrators Applied Electronics, the installation was custom designed to meet the college's exact needs. Blending its requirement for industry-standard equipment, live radio broadcasting and easy maintenance, Applied Electronics installed Type R mix environments in four on-air broadcast studios and 18 individual recording booths. The college uses Type R's flexible Large Soft Panel (LSP) with the headless Calrec Assist application in all its recording booths and adds physical Type R fader modules in its studio environments.

"We wanted to simplify our infrastructure to share more sources/destinations with greater reliability, and we needed to simplify operations for our students while keeping all the functions and features required for a full radio station," said Morin. "It gives us much more flexibility and reliability; it enables us to share every source destination or every studio/booth without using DAs or physical patch cords, as well as remove a lot of technical equipment from our CER."

"We have total technical independence across all 18 recording booths and all four studios," added Morin. "Type R makes it easier for our technical staff to maintain and troubleshoot the system, which lessens the impact on pedagogy, and the ability to share DSP gives us backup solutions if ever we have any problems. It’s vital that we focus on industry-standard functions and behaviours, and this installation means we can focus on operations instead of systems."

Home to more than 2,500 students from across the globe, the Cégep de Jonquière is a major public college in Québec, Canada. Established in 1967 it was one of the first public colleges in the province, and a pioneer in media related curriculums that evolved through the years to reach new highs in the last few years. Its media related courses boasts relationships with institutions in Europe and Africa as well as media partners across Canada.
