BBC footage featured in ‘The Day After Tomorrow’
BBC Library Sales has licensed a wide range of natural disaster footage for use in 20th Century Fox's blockbuster movie ‘The Day After Tomorrow’, directed by Roland Emmerich (Independence Day).
The film opened in the UK on May.
BBC Library Sales, a division of BBC Worldwide, worked directly with Los Angeles-based DAT Productions and 20th Century Fox, initially providing clips for use in the film's trailer.
The clips, taken from the BBC's Natural Disasters Compilation Reel and the CBS News Archive, gave the trailer, and subsequently the movie, the 'heart-thumping' look and feel that could only be achieved from authentic news footage.
"We were attracted to BBC Library Sales' extensive collection of natural disaster footage and knew that licensing the clips for the teaser trailer would help entice audiences in advance of the film's release. The buzz around the trailer was tremendous. Since it first started appearing on-line and in theatres in the US, we have built up incredible momentum, helped by the quality and realism of the scenes from the BBC," said Aaron Cullen of DAT Productions.
The licensed clips included footage of typhoons; raging floods tearing down buildings and carrying away houses; and harrowing rescue scenes.
Mark Fricker, Director of BBC Library Sales, said: "In a project laden with CGI and effects, certain shots still required the realism that can only be achieved from actual natural disaster footage. The clips supplied were integrated beautifully and contributed greatly to the overall impact."
The Day After tomorrow takes a big-budget, special effects filled look at what the world would look like if the greenhouse effect and global warming continued at such levels that they resulted in worldwide catastrophe and disaster, including multiple hurricanes, tornadoes, tidal waves, floods and the beginning of the next Ice Age.
