CTS scores ‘The Return of the King’
CTS Studios played a key role in the creation of the orchestral score for New Line Cinema's ‘The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King’, the third film in the hugely successful The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
The film has been named Best Picture of 2003 by the Broadcast Film Critics Association in the US, at the 9th annual Critics Choice Awards, and has received four Golden Globes, including awards for the Original Score and Original Song categories. It has also received Oscar nominations in eleven categories, including Music (original score) and Sound Mixing.
CTS Studios' dedicated music scoring facility at the Colosseum, the renowned symphonic hall just north of London, also scored the previous two films in the trilogy, with this most recent project in the series being recorded over a three-month period. The orchestral sessions at CTS captured composer Howard Shore's mammoth score, with Shore conducting the 96-piece orchestra plus numerous soloists.
Engineered by John Kurlander, who has been responsible for recording all the Lord of the Rings scores, the sessions were recorded onto a 48-track Pro Tools system, using a Euphonix FC727, via a MADI router from CTS Studios' Capricorn console, with a Sony 3348HR, also fed from the router, to provide a safety back-up.
