Doremi release HD MPEG-2 PCI-X encoder

Doremi Technologies are now delivering the Orca real-time MPEG-2 encoder for High Definition and Standard Definition video.
Supplied on a PCI-X card, it provides a winning combination of high bit-rate video compression, HD and SD video support and extensive encoding controls in a Linux environment, and soon for XP.
Orca provides real-time MPEG-2 encoding of HD video at up to 200 Mb/s. Encoding parameters, such as GOP structure, 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 profiles and output bit rate are among the many that can be set to meet quality and bit rate targets for a variety of uses. These range from network transmission, to digital cinema and compressing material for playback from low cost MPEG-2 players. Orca is particularly useful for encoding the HD output of live events such as concerts and sports. Thanks to its multiple GOP-structure support, its use also extends to video capture for HD and SD post production for editing or DVD mastering.
There are two ways to use the versatile Orca card: in a PC or standalone. In a PC it acts as a file encoder. It accepts serial digital HD-SDI and SDI video in any digital TV standard format, from which it extracts video, audio and other ancillary data. The video is compressed using MPEG-2. Up to 8 embedded digital audio channels can either be uncompressed or compressed using MPEG-1 layer II or Dolby AC-3. Ancillary data can be saved as MPEG-2 metadata. An easy-to-use Linux SDK, and soon Windows 2000/XP SDK, is provided and a library to control source VTRs and DDRs via a Sony 9-pin interface will be available soon. In addition, a lower cost Orca PCI card is offered for 4:2:0-only encoding.
Working standalone and needing only 5/12Vcc power, the card delivers a real-time DVB-ASI stream output with compressed video and audio to make an HD-SDI to DVB-ASI encoder/converter. There is an Ethernet 100BT port for file exchange and control. In addition, an RS232 port allows HyperTerminal type command line.
The Orca-Box is due for delivery in January 2004. This is a complete Encoder-Recorder/Player unit in a 3RU Doremi Silver enclosure with a front panel VTR-like user interface. The Orca-Box will allow immediate HD MPEG-2 encoding, recording and playback, easy operation and the advantages of instant access to any recorded material and very low running costs.
