DJI Improves Geofencing Tech In App Update

News Image
DJI has confirmed that it has improved its geofencing system as part of a new update to its DJI GO app. The app controls the company's Inspire and Phantom aerial platforms.

The Geospatial Environment Online (GEO) software enables pilots to avoid operating drones near airports and other restricted locations. It is a further improvement to DJI's No-Fly Zone technology as it includes permanent restrictions around prisons, nuclear power plants and other locations. This also includes temporary restrictions for stadiums and national security events. The software upgrade also introduces flexibility for drone pilots by giving them the ability to unlock some restricted areas where they have permission to operate.

The GEO system prevents flights from entering or launching in some zones – i.e. airports – unless a pilot with a verified DJI account temporarily unlocks it for a permissible use. The system prevents inadvertent flights in some areas while allowing them for beneficial uses such as sanctioned inspections, model aircraft activities, and indoor flight. However, there are certain areas that raise national security concerns, such as Washington, D.C., that cannot be unlocked.

The GEO system is available for iOS systems and Android in the latest app update, and operates on all Inspire models as well as the Phantom 4, Phantom 3 Professional and Phantom 3 Advanced models. Pilots are advised to update their app as well as the firmware for their controller and aircraft. Currently, it covers 17 countries including most of North America and western Europe. It is understood it will continue to expand to other regions.

Geofencing technology provides an enhanced level of safety for airspace users. While safe flight is the responsibility of each pilot, geofencing aims to make compliance easier and more effective.
