Hat Trick Internationals Spy Goes Undercover In More Than 100 Countries

Hat Trick International has pre-sold the second season of its BAFTA award-winning UK comedy drama Spy to 105 countries it was announced today. Among others, the deals see Spy season two going into major territories such as Japan and France.
In addition to Series 1 being picked up by BBC Canada, YLE Finland, RUV Iceland, TVNZ New Zealand and PopTV Slovenia, the series two package (10 x 30’ plus 1 x 60’ Christmas special), which begins filming at the end of June, has been pre-sold to Canal+ Family France, Wowow Japan, TV2 Norway, TV4 Komedi Sweden, Sony Pictures Television Networks Asia, DBS Israel, BBC Worldwide for BBC Entertainment Poland, Africa* and Hulu USA.
Created and written by Simeon Goulden, Spy is a Hat Trick production for the UK’s Sky 1 HD which was launched internationally at MIPCOM 2011. Leading actor Darren Boyd was awarded a BAFTA for his performance in Spy in May 2012, winning the category for Best Male Performance in a Comedy Programme.
Sarah Tong, Director of Sales at Hat Trick International, said: “It’s the combination of the instantly recognisable world of espionage, with an off-beat, unconventional comedy, that has proved an exciting concept to a wide spectrum of territories. It’s a refreshing twist that enables Spy to stand out in a competitive market.”
Spy tells the story of Tim (Darren Boyd - Whites, Case Sensitive), a single father trying to win back the respect and affections of his precocious nine year old son, Marcus. In the hope of proving that he is not a complete loser, Tim quits his dead-end job only to find his life changes forever when he is accidentally recruited as a trainee spy for the UK Security Service, MI5.
Tim struggles as he attempts to run his parallel family and professional lives without his secret being discovered. Supervising Tim at work is his irrepressible MI5 boss known only as “The Examiner” (Robert Lindsay - My Family) who teaches new recruits his own unorthodox approach to the espionage game. Adding to the chaos of Tim’s life are his acidic ex-wife, Judith, her enthusiastic new boyfriend Philip and his anti-social friend Chris.
