Man convicted of poison attack plot
A man who murdered a police officer has been convicted of a plot to spread deadly poisons in the UK.
Algerian Kamel Bourgass, who is believed to have links to al-Qaeda, is already serving a life sentence for the murder of Detective Constable Stephen Oake during a police raid in Manchester in January 2003. Bourgass, who police believe was trained in camps in Afghanistan, had fled to Manchester following a raid on a London flat which uncovered material to help manufacture deadly poisons such as ricin and cyanide, as well as instructions for making explosives. Bourgass had fled from the flat, in Wood Green, north London, but was arrested in Manchester a few days later. He attempted to escape, stabbing DC Oake to death and injuring three other officers. He received a life sentence for DC Oake’s murder in June 2004. Bourgass was convicted today of conspiracy to commit a public nuisance by the use of poisons and explosives. Four other men were cleared of the conspiracy charges last week. Charges have also reportedly been dropped against other four men who were due to stand trial next week. Another man, Mohammed Meguerba, is awaiting trial in Algeria - he had jumped bail and fled from the UK. (KMcA/GB)
