Cadbury Deal Closure Looms |
|
Cadbury workers have called on the government to intervene in the takeover bid by a US foods firm.
Shareholder of the chocolate produce have until lunchtime today to vote on a £11.5bn ($18.9bn) offer put forward by Kraft. Union members are concerned by the lack of guarantees over job security. Unite has lobbied ministers to back employee retention. Lord Mandelson, the Business Secretary, is expected to meet Kraft chief executive Irene Rosenfeld to discuss jobs if the deal goes ahead. Unite's deputy general secretary Jack Dromey said the union is concerned the takeover is not in the "national interest". "In the months of this hostile takeover process, we have heard nothing from Kraft to calm fears that it is in the interest of the Cadbury workforce either," he said. "The government must secure meaningful pledges from Kraft, and police them so that Kraft cannot again walk away from a UK workforce. "Ministers must make it abundantly clear that closures and mass redundancies will not be accepted by the British government or the British people." (PR/GK) |
