Book Celebrating Elstree Studio's History Published

'Elstree Studios: A Celebration of Film and Television' pays tribute to 90 years of film and television production at the world-famous site, located in London.

The Studios was – and still is – home to some of the most successful and enduring films and television shows produced in the UK; from the original Star Wars and Indiana Jones trilogies to the The King's Speech and Paddington Bear, as well as The Saint, The Avengers, Strictly Come Dancing and Big Brother. Elstree is also known for television drama productions such as Grantchester and Humans.

The book has an exclusive introduction written by Tom Hooper, the Oscar-winning director of The King's Speech. The film, which stars Colin Firth, was shot on Elstree's stages, as was Hooper's most recent movie, The Danish Girl.

"I have greatly enjoyed my times at Elstree and am delighted to be a part of both its story and its history," he said.

With contributions from actors, directors and behind-the-scenes personnel, the book traces the studios' history starting in 1926; from humble beginnings, through the golden age of film, tough times and the threat of closure, to becoming London's go-to film and television studio today. The site's fascinating history is also illustrated with more than 250 photographs and film stills.

This is a celebration of a world-class film and television site, and provides a unique insight into the past glories and hurdles Elstree has faced as they now look forward to an exciting future.

Morris Bright is the Chairman of Elstree Studios and an author of several books on film. Paul Burton is a writer and film and television historian. Both have worked on projects relating to the history of Elstree Studios for 20 years.
