'There Will Be Success' For Epic Tale

‘There Will Be Blood’ received a timely boost ahead of the Oscars picking up two awards from the Berlin Film Festival while successfully broadening out to cinemas nationwide in the UK.

Paul Thomas Anderson was awarded the Silver Bear for Best Director by the Berlin Film Festival jury, an award he won previously in 1999 for Magnolia. Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood was awarded Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution for his innovative, resonant score.

Following exceptional figures on its London opening last week, There Will Be Blood broadened out to cinemas across the UK this weekend, taking £537,039 from 121 screens, for an impressive £4,438 screen average. The film has grossed £885,535 so far and will open across Ireland on February 29.

There Will Be Blood is nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Film and Best Director for Paul Thomas Anderson, making it the joint top-nominated film alongside No Country for Old Men.

Daniel Day-Lewis is widely considered a certainty to win his second Best Actor Oscar, following wins at the BAFTAs, Golden Globes and SAG Awards.

The 80th Academy Awards take place on February 24.

There Will Be Blood is the fifth film from writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson (Punch-Drunk Love, Magnolia, Boogie Nights, Hard Eight). Anderson’s screenplay is loosely based upon the classic, 1920s muck-raking novel Oil! by Upton Sinclair.
